What’s New in PlayStation 5 Slim and Release Date

The PlayStation 5 Slim completely replaced the original launch model as the default PlayStation hardware. While it features the exact same gaming performance (same 10.3 TFLOPS processing power, frame rates, and 4K visuals) as the original console, Sony introduced several major design overhauls and physical quality-of-life upgrades.

Here is everything new, tweaked, and redesigned on the PS5 Slim.

1. A Much Smaller and Lighter Footprint

The original PS5 was infamous for being the largest console in modern gaming history. The PS5 Slim trims down that massive bulk significantly:

  • Total Volume: Reduced by more than 30% compared to the original launch models.

  • Weight: It sheds a massive amount of mass—the Disc version is 24% lighter than the original, while the Digital model drops by 18%

2. Upgraded Internal Storage (1TB)

The original launch PS5 came with an unconventional 825GB internal SSD. The Slim upgrades this to a full 1TB SSD straight out of the box. This gives you roughly an extra 175GB of usable storage for heavy game installs before you have to worry about buying an internal M.2 expansion drive

3. A Modular, Detachable Disc Drive

This is the most innovative structural change. Instead of having to permanently choose between a physical Disc or Digital console at checkout, the PS5 Slim features a completely modular layout.

  • If you buy the lower-cost PS5 Slim Digital Edition, you can purchase a separate, official Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive later. It snaps onto the side of the console seamlessly without requiring any tools.

4. Quad-Panel Aesthetic & Multi-Textured Finishes

The look of the console has shifted from its older "two-winged" aesthetic. Instead of two giant solid side panels, the Slim features four separate cover panels split by a clean black accent line running through the center. The top two panels feature a reflective, glossy finish, while the bottom panels retain a textured matte look

5.Dual Front-Facing USB-C Ports

Sony updated the front I/O panel to match modern connection standards. The original PS5 featured one USB-A and one USB-C port on the front. The Slim replaces the front USB-A port entirely, giving you two USB-C ports side-by-side for easier, faster data transfer and controller charging. (Note: Two USB-A ports remain located on the back of the console).

⚠️ The Catch: What’s "Missing" or Extra?

  • The Vertical Stand is Sold Separately: The original PS5 included a plastic stand that worked for both vertical and horizontal setups. The PS5 Slim only includes two small plastic "feet" to lay it down horizontally. If you want to stand the Slim up vertically safely, you have to buy the official chrome-ring vertical stand separately.

  • Price Increase on the Digital Model: While the standard Disc version stayed at $499, the Digital Slim model launched at $449—a $50 price bump compared to the original $399 digital launch price.
